چکیده

Van Niel's classical distinction between bacterial and green plant photosyntheses is based on the differences in the metabolism of the photooxidant (16). But direct measurement of the oxidizing power in bacterial photosynthesis is, at best, difficult with the usual spectrophotometric equipment. Light-induced oxidations of endogenous cytochromes have been demonstrated in whole cells and extracts of Rhodospirillffii rubrurn (2, 4, 15), but special spectrophotometers were always required. The oxidizing power generated by light was easily measured by Vernon and Kamen using as the assay the photooxidation of reduced indophenol or exogenous mammalian cyto-

Dinitrogenase reductase-activating glycohydrolase can be released from chromatophores of Rhodospirillum rubrum by treatment with MgGDP.

Dinitrogenase reductase-activating glycohydrolase (DRAG), involved in the regulation of nitrogenase activity in Rhodospirillum rubrum, is associated with chromatophore membranes in cell extracts. We show that DRAG can be specifically released by treatment with MgGDP; other nucleotides studied had no effect. The DRAG activity released corresponds to the release of DRAG protein.

Structure and Photochemical Activity of Chlorophyll-Containing Particles from Rhodospirillum rubrum

Comparative studies on isolated chromatophores and on sectioned cells of the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum confirm the assumption expressed in earlier investigations that the photochemically active chromatophores isolated from disrupted cells represent structural chlorophyll-bearing components of the protoplast. Actively growing cells from light-grown cultures about 12 hours ol...

Resolution of enzymes catalyzing energy-linked transhydrogenation. IV. Reconstitution of adenosine triphosphate-driven transhydrogenation in depleted chromatophores of Rhodospirillum rubrum by the transhydrogenase factor and a soluble oligomycin-insensitive Mg ++ -adenosine triphosphatase.

The catalysis of the energy-linked transhydrogenation reaction of Rhodospirillum rubrum chromatophores is dependent upon a soluble protein, the transhydrogenase factor. This factor can be detached from the chromatophore membrane by the relatively mild procedures of extensive washing, passage of chromatophores through Sephadex G-ZOO, or sedimentation of chromatophores through a dense sucrose sol...

A disulfide photoreduction system in chromatophores of Rhodospirillum rubrum.

Chromatophores isolated from photosynthetic bacteria contain a disulfide-bonded repeating antigenic substructure that is serologically specific and present on the cell particles only during photosynthetic growth (l-3). This finding suggests that the structural antigen may also be a functional part of the photosynthetic electron transport system. This suggestion has been explored and supported b...
